Abstract
Recent statistics suggest that 24% of the UK population is disabled (Gov.co.uk, 2023), and yet disability is rarely presented in classroom texts, and – when it is – may inadvertently reinforce ableist narratives. In this chapter we explore disability narratives as they appear in two key classroom texts Of Mice and Men (1937) and Wonder (2012). Readers are guided to critique the ableist narratives within these texts and to consider pedagogical approaches which might support them to acknowledge the experiences of some, both in and out of their classroom. Using the theoretical lens of Crip theory, we invite teachers to consider ‘re-cripping’ their approaches to texts, to their classrooms and to themselves, for the benefit of all.
